This Wednesday sees the premiere of one of the biggest films shown at the T&T film festival; A movie about the island’s national instrument the Steel-pan.
The docudrama is a perfect combination of the birth of the Steel-pan 70 years ago which divulges in the history of T&T’s national instrument and the young people of Laventille who were involved in its creation as well as looking at the people who professionally play the Steel-pan every year in the Panorama competition.
Pan! Our Music Odyssey, written by Dr Kim Johnson, a pan historian and also the head of the Carnival Institute. Johnson made sure that the film stayed close to its roots in Trinidad, shooting the whole film on the island and using a cast of mainly Trinidadians including some of T&T’s best known actors such Errol Fabien, Penelope Spencer, Che Rodriguez, and Conrad Parris. The film’s hero is Goldteeth, played by emerging young talent Renaldo Frederick.
Due to the success of the film screening at the T&T film festival and Womex Music and Film market in Spain there have been talks to for the film to be shown in Paris, South Africa and Miami in 2015.
Pan! Our Music Odyssey opens at cinemas across T&T on November 5. It can be seen at Cinemas 8 Trincity, MovieTowne, Digicel IMAX and Empire Cinema, San Fernando.
